Describe the Property, Not the Potential Buyer

When it comes to crafting property descriptions and adhering to “non-discriminatory” real estate practices, the term “family home” (i.e. great family home) is strongly discouraged by the Fair Housing Division of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights.

We have been informed that this particular description, or others like it, could be interpreted to be discriminant. Thus, to minimize your legal risk, this phrase should not be used in your listing descriptions for properties.

Additionally, the Fair Housing Division recommends that brokers and agents stick to describing property based on its characteristics – not those of the property’s potential buyers.

If you are not sure about the use of specific terms or phrases, please consult with your Broker. You can also review this page on our website: https://realcomp.moveinmichigan.com/Products-Services/Support/MLS-Items/67-Words-to-Exclude-from-Listings
